Ask your student about the office on the first floor across from the lunchroom. It belongs to School Resource Officer Sam Corkins, and it is stocked with treats and snacks that any Blue Knight can come and take, at no charge. He pays for all of it himself.
Stop by at dismissal on a Friday and you will find a steady line of students waiting patiently for a favorite item, and a lot of thank-yous on the way out. Literally everyone at Hume-Fogg knows about the goodies waiting in Officer Corkins’ office.
Assistant Principal Rick Stanley puts it this way:
Officer Corkins is known and beloved by our entire student body because of his generosity and care for the students. Officer Corkins spends his own money to stock his office full of treats and snacks for the students to come and get at no charge. Not only is he a vital member of our school community to keep us safe, he makes sure students always feel welcome. We are so fortunate and grateful to have him as a part of our school community.
Eight years, two schools, one promise
Officer Corkins has served as an MNPS police officer in two schools over the past eight years, first at Hillwood and now at Hume-Fogg. He also works with the MNPD summer program at Meigs that your student may have attended. When he came to the Castle he promised the future graduates of the Class of 2027 that he would stay until they graduated, and he has kept that promise.
The snacks are only part of it. Over the years he has provided food for students to take home to their families, had at least five pallets of food delivered to the school, and, with his wife, continually shops for deals so there is something on hand for every student. All told, he has brought in about $25,000 worth of food for Hume-Fogg students over those eight years.
Fellow School Resource Officer Laura Hall remembers the three weeks he spent in Italy at the start of this school year: “He was so concerned about the students going without snacks for the three weeks he would be gone that he made arrangements to make sure they still got his snacks.”
Asked what he likes best about Hume-Fogg, Officer Corkins answered: “The kids, the camaraderie, the building, the location, the history. I love it all. Hume-Fogg means everything to me.”
It is wonderful to have someone who keeps us safe and who cares about our students so well. Thank you, Officer Corkins!
